Andromeda Botanic Gardens was established by multi-award winning Iris Bannochie (1914-1988), a Barbadian self-taught scientist, around her home in St Joseph. Her first husband, the equally gifted Dr Harry Bayley played a crucial role. Created as a private botanical space, Andromeda contains an unparalleled collection of different plants from many other tropical and sub-tropical locations, either collected by Iris Bannochie herself, as she travelled the world on plant-collecting expeditions, or given to her as gifts. Iris planted trees! These and the other 400 species of plants are possibly the greatest gift to our country's biodiversity in a 1950s monocultural landscape that was full of sugar cane.
Featured on BBC TV and Radio, Botanical Treasure winner, Lecture for KMIS at Kew Gardens and various magazine and newspaper articles, Andromeda Botanic Gardens is truly world class.

What a legacy! However, Andromeda remains misunderstood, underappreciated and under-visited. Her closest contemporary would be the great Beth Chatto from the UK, whose garden is valued and protected. We hope Andromeda will, one day, be valued and admired and Iris Bannochie, the queen of Barbadian horticulture and creator of this masterpiece, will not be forgotten.
